About Colour & Clay
Colour & Clay is a small, artist-led pottery studio based in North Kensington, London. Founded by artists Vinicius Les and Eliz Boglarka Varga, the studio offers a calm and attentive space for learning the craft of ceramics through small, carefully guided classes.
The Studio
The studio was created with the intention of offering a different kind of learning environment — one that values patience, attention, and a genuine engagement with the material. Classes are deliberately kept small, allowing each participant the time and guidance needed to develop confidence at their own pace.
Rather than focusing only on producing a finished object, the emphasis is placed on understanding the process of working with clay and gradually building a sense of independence in the studio.
The Artists
Vinicius and Eliz are both practicing visual artists with a background in ceramics and a broader engagement with the arts, including drawing, printmaking, painting, and installation.
Their approach to teaching is shaped by their own artistic practice, where making is understood not only as a technical activity, but as a way of thinking, observing, and engaging with the world.
This perspective informs the atmosphere of the studio — one that is calm, attentive, and rooted in a respect for the craft.
Why the Studio Exists
Colour & Clay grew from a desire to create a space where people could step away from the pace of everyday life and engage in a slower, more focused form of making.
In a city where many experiences are fast and outcome-driven, the studio offers an alternative: time to learn, to repeat, to make mistakes, and to gradually become more familiar with the material.
An Inclusive Approach
Alongside public classes, the studio also offers supported sessions for individuals who benefit from a more attentive and adaptable learning environment.
This work forms an important part of the studio’s ethos, reflecting a belief that meaningful access to creative practice should be available to a wider range of participants.
A Continuing Practice
Colour & Clay remains closely connected to the artists’ own ongoing practice, and the studio continues to evolve as both a place of teaching and making.
