A hands-on introduction to the tactile experience of clay and wheel-throwing designed for children.

50 British pounds
Blechynden Street Studios

What to expect

This hands-on session introduces children to working with clay on the potter’s wheel in a calm, supportive and creative environment. With clear demonstrations and step-by-step guidance, children learn how clay responds to their hands, how to begin centring and shaping, and how small adjustments affect form. There is plenty of time to practise, explore and ask questions during the session. Most participants will make one or two small pots during the session. One selected piece can be decorated with coloured glazes which will be fired and ready to be collected in 14-20 days. This is a children-focused session, suitable for ages 8+. Adults cannot attend without a participating child. By joining our public programmes, you also help support Colour and Clay’s long-term mentoring work with neurodivergent young adults. What’s Included in the Children’s Pottery Wheel Taster Session 1. Welcome & Studio Introduction Children are introduced to the studio, tools, and basic safety rules. They learn how the potter’s wheel works and how clay is prepared, helping them feel confident and comfortable in the space. 2. Demonstration & Skill Introduction • The tutor demonstrates key techniques, including: • Preparing and positioning clay • Basic centring • Opening and shaping a simple form • Controlling speed and pressure • Children observe closely and are encouraged to ask questions. 3. Guided Hands-On Practice • Each child works at their own wheel with individual guidance and encouragement. • The tutor provides ongoing support, helping children: • Develop hand coordination • Improve focus and patience • Understand cause and effect in making • Build confidence through repetition • Children typically make one or two small pots during this stage. 4. Creative Decorating with Coloured Glazes Each child selects one favourite piece and decorates it using coloured glazes. This allows them to explore pattern, colour, and surface design while personalising their work under guided supervision. 5. Selection, Reflection & Clean-Up Participants reflect on what they have made and learn how raw clay becomes a finished ceramic object. The tutor explains the drying, glazing, and firing process in simple terms.
